Suansiúl (Sleepwalk)
Shiúlamar tré bháisteach
An oíche sin sa bhFómhar
Gan ré ná réalta romhainn sa ród.
Bhí boladh úr aráin
Ag cumhrú an aeir
Ag ramhrú anáil ár mbéil.
Bhí na bóithre gan trácht,
Gach solas ina ghlas
Ag fáiltiú romhainn beirt chun siúil,
Ise lena méara ag casadh fáinne fí
Mo sheanabhróg ag rince céim.
Bhí an oíche róghearr is an domhan róchúng,
An mhaidin rómhór leis an ngrian;
Bhí an bóthar chomh fuar
Is an domhan róchúng dár suansiúl,
Dár suansiúl, a rún.
Chualamar na buidéil ag clingeadh insa bhfuacht
Is iad ag fógairt tús an lae;
Bhí crúiscín bainne i gcúinne den spéir,
An mhaidin ina cupa lán.
Tar liom go himeall an domhain …
Táimse in éad leis an ngealaigh …
Chualamar na buidéil ag clingeadh insa bhfuacht
Is iad ag fógairt tús an lae;
Bhí crúiscín bainne i gcúinne den spéir,
An mhaidin ina cupa lán.
Bhí an oíche róghearr is an domhan róchúng,
An mhaidin rómhór leis an ngrian;
Bhí an bóthar chomh fuar
Is an domhan róchúng dár suansiúl,
Dár suansiúl, a rún.
Sleepwalk
We walked through the downpour
One night in September
Without a star or a moon to guide us.
The smell of the bakery
Was sweetening the air,
As thick as bread in our mouths.
There wasn’t a car or a truck on the road
And all the traffic-lights were green
Hurrying us along on our way.
Her fingers were dancing a reel
While my worn-out shoes kept time.
The night was too short and the world too small,
The morning in cahoots with the sun.
The streets were too cold
And the world too small for our sleepwalk,
Our sleepwalking love.
We heard bottles rattle in the cold
Announcing the start of the day;
There was a jug of milk in the corner of the sky
And morning was filled to the brim.
Come with me to the edge of the world …
I envy the moon …
We heard the bottles rattle in the cold
Announcing the start of the day;
There was a jug of milk in the corner of the sky
And morning was filled to the brim.
The night was too short and the world too small,
The morning in cahoots with the sun.
The streets were too cold
And the world too small for our sleepwalk,
Our sleepwalking love.
